Spider-Man PS4 teaser!

Posted: June 15, 2016 in Comics, Video Games

One game that sort of came out of nowhere during the opening of E3 was Insomniac Games new PS4 Spider-Man. Look at those visuals! The game looks stunning and I’m pretty sure it’s a PlayStation exclusive. Insomniac said they have been working with Marvel to create an original game and if the teaser is any indication gamers are in for a real treat. Add to that the fact the company have a brilliant track record with past hits such as Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. I think we may be looking at the best Spider-Man game ever made here folks!

No locked release date is available just yet but when we know more so will you.

Interesting news broke over the last few hours with the makers of the new Resident Evil VII dropping a few facts regarding the changes fans can expect. Capcom have stated the following-

The demo is a tech demo and a mission statement to fans. It is not the actual opening of the game. You will play a different character in the full game. The environments may feature but they will be used differently.

Sadly (personally speaking) the game will be first person and not third person. I don’t hate that move. I love Alien Isolation but I prefer seeing the characters with Resident Evil.

Resident Evil VII is not a reboot or a remake. It is a sequel to the previous games and by the time players have finished the full game it will become clear just how much of a Resident Evil experience the game is.

Don’t expect to play as Jill, Chris, Leon or Claire. Capcom stated they wanted a new “normal” person as the lead character. No trained agents who could by now probably sleepwalk through any threat.

Although the demo would suggest otherwise the full game will allow players to gain weapons and eventually be able to go toe to toe with whatever the threat is they are facing.

And finally…Capcom said the reasoning behind the changes is that they no longer want to try and please everyone. Smart move. You can’t.

It’s been suggested that the heavy action routes taken by Resident Evil 5 & 6 were a reaction to big sellers such as Call of Duty. Which is silly because why would or should Resident Evil even have to feel it needs to compare itself or compete with that sort of franchise?

I think THINK I may hold off on covering Resident Evil VII moving forward. I feel like Capcom have teased just enough to the point that I don’t want to know anymore now until I get my hands on the game. Rest assured if I do post anything it will not contain spoilers.

Wow. Talk about going back to your roots. Here is the new Resident Evil. It’s not a reboot or a remake it’s a full on Resident Evil VII. But what the hell is going on? Where is everyone we’ve come to know over the past twenty years? What is up with this firs person play style? Why do I kind of love this DRASTIC change in direction for the series? Check out the trailer and decide for yourself if you’re more than ready to get scared to death by what looks to be the return of survival horror.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is out Jan 24th 2017 for PS4, X-Box One and PC. If you’re a member of PlayStation Plus you can download a demo…right now! Go!!

The above trailer highlights how gameplay and story mode cut scenes will transition seamlessly back and forth during the game’s story mode. It’s a good idea. I like what I’m seeing and if you think 2017 is a bit of a wait, it’s not. Not when you factor in how long console owners had to wait to get their hands on Tekken 6. Wow. Also don’t forget we’ve got Street Fighter V, King of Fighters and Guilty Gear all out this year. No problem with letting Injustice 2 and Tekken 7 wait until 2017.

Injustice 2 gameplay trailer!

Posted: June 12, 2016 in Video Games

Here is the Injustice 2 gameplay reveal. It looks colourful doesn’t it? I like that. Vibrant and very comic book like. I felt the last game was lacking a bit of that with it’s more serious tone. Would I have liked to have seen a few more fights play out in standard rounds? Sure. But it’s called a gameplay reveal/trailer for a reason. It’s just a taste and E3 is next week! No doubt there will be plenty of footage then of how the game plays.

Based off this tease? Well we got those stage transitions back and they seem grander and then you got the super moves which seem bigger. Ed Boon has said there’s a few other new features that will make this stand out from the last game and they’ll be revealed soon. The new guys Gorilla Grodd and Atrocitus look great & Supergirl already looks to have a  different style to Superman. I can’t wait to see some more of what each of these new characters bring to the series.

Black Manta makes a cameo in this trailer but he’s not confirmed playable. Yet. I saw a lot of hype for this guy on Twitter after the trailer went live. I didn’t even know who he was but I gather he’s an Aquaman villain?

The gear is spotted in this tease too. At the very least I like how you can change up how the character(s) look but we’ll have to wait and see how it effects the gameplay. The more I think about it the more I’m thinking it will be like the variations in Mortal Kombat X.

Injustice 2 is due out 2017.

The Rock

Posted: June 10, 2016 in Movies

The Rock. Also known as one of the best action movies ever made. My God the 90’s put out some amazing action movies. The Rock has to be one of my all time favourites. It was released in the summer of ’96. Directed by Michael Bay (all you Bay bashers need to recognize the guy is a legit good film maker. Don’t like those Transformers movies? Look at the script. Not him) and starring Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage and Ed Harris.

The plot has Cage’s FBI agent Stanley Goodspeed called upon to help stop Harris’s General Hummel. Hummel and his men have taken over Alcatraz armed with missiles carrying deadly chemical weapons and have ’em pointed right at San Francisco. The catch is that no one knows Alcatraz better than the one guy who broke out. Enter Connery’s John Mason. He’s the one guy who can lead a covert mission into the prison and disarm the threats without being noticed! Let’s just say the mission doesn’t go according to plan and the results are one hell of a classic action adventure.

The film looks gorgeous. Bay has an eye for film like no one else. The Rock just looks cool. Period. Yet it’s backed up by a strong script, well executed action scenes and great performances. The stakes are high and the characters compelling. The opening of the film is a ticking clock situation that establishes off the bat what sort of pace the film will have and who our lead character is. It’s simple and does a great job. The film is also very funny but never at the expense of the high stakes.

Cage is wonderful as Goodspeed, a science guy who is forced into a combat situation. Mason has a great backstory and shades of tragedy to his history that leave the viewer rooting for him as everyone seems set on making sure this guy who dared to fight back stays buried once he’s outlived his usefulness to the mission. Even the bad guys are presented in shades of grey for the most part. I don’t want to spoil the film but you can kind of see and get behind Hummel and his reasoning, even if the way he goes about getting justice is questionable. It doesn’t hurt that Ed Harris is an incredible actor.

I can’t finish this off without mentioning the incredible score by Hans Zimmer. His music injects urgency and excitement into the action scenes and weight to the more emotional moments of the film.

The Rock is excellent. A brilliant movie that I simply can not praise enough.

That trailer is odd. At first I was like “What the hell is this?” It looked liked Tron. After watching the trailer again and reading the press release the game sounds very cool and ambitious. The basic hook is a RPG like levelling system via which players will be able to equip their chosen fighter(s) with gear that will alter their look and how they play. For example I could use Batman and have him look and play totally different than YOUR Batman.

I feel this is very VERY ambitious and it begs the question of unfair advantages depending on gear levels but I could be wrong. Who knows… I trust in NetherRealm. Mortal Kombat X was/is a great game and I’m sure they’ll do just as well with Injustice II.

Here is the press release with more info on the gear and characters!

Injustice 2 offers the latest DC fighting game experience that expands on the previous title’s larger-than-life showdowns. Every battle defines you in a game where players personalize iconic DC characters with unique and powerful gear earned throughout the game. For the first time gamers can take control of how their characters look, fight and develop across a variety of game modes.

Injustice 2 continues the epic cinematic story introduced in Injustice: Gods Among Us as Batman and his allies work towards putting the pieces of society back together while struggling against those who want to restore Superman’s regime. In the midst of the chaos, a new threat appears that will put Earth’s existence at risk.

Players can play from the biggest DC roster ever offered in a fighting game, from classic fan favorites such as Batman, Superman, Supergirl and Aquaman, to astonishing new villains like Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd. Battles will take place across arenas that have evolved in scale and span across iconic locations such as Metropolis, Gotham City and Atlantis.

I’m excited to see Supergirl and Gorilla Grodd in action. Big fan of the first game, love the environment interaction and the super moves are epic. It will be interesting to see who makes the cut as far as returning characters go, I’d say it will be most of the big hitters and a ton of new characters. The press release certainly gives the impression the roster will be bigger than the first game.

Now the only question is do I get the game when it’s out or wait until 2018 for the (probably) sure thing of a Ultimate Edition that will include all of the DLC haha. Hey maybe they’ll do a Street Fighter V thing where you can earn the DLC without paying!

Shane Black. Two words that equate to a great movie. It is a simple as that. The writer director is in a field of his own and it is glorious and cool. Back in 1991 when The Last Boy Scout hit screens Black wasn’t directing and was known more for his writing. The late and great Tony Scott takes on directing duties here and the results are golden.

Scott kicks things off with a MTV style musical opening that is loud and all American proud. “Friday Night’s a great night for football!” that song alone is just out of this world. The plot is actually about football in a round about way, as with other efforts from Black the central plot is unravelled by the film’s characters right until the last act when everything slots into place and the central mystery is solved and the plot revealed. It’s like pulp noir and works SO well.

Bruce Willis plays Joe Hallenbeck, a beat up private eye who has some personnel issues and piss poor attitude who is forced into teaming up with Damon Wayan’s disgraced ex NFL star Jimmy Dix. Hallenbeck and Dix find themselves thrust into a mystery that is starting to leave a pile of bodies in it’s wake and may have a connection to America’s most loved game. If you don’t like football or sports movies don’t let that put you off because the game is just a plot device. This film is packed full of great action, dialogue, likeable characters and confident direction.

Willis and Wayans have good chemistry and are backed up by solid support from Chelsea Field, Danielle Harris, Halle Berry and a great turn from Kim Coates. Harris in particular steals a lot of scenes. She’s such an underrated actress and why she never took off into the big time as she got older is a mystery to me. Coates and Berry were just starting to climb the acting ladder so it’s cool seeing those actors in small roles considering their success today and Field really nails the frustration and conflict as Hallenbeck’s wife who has had enough of his crap.

I love Shane Black and to say The Last Boy Scout is good and worthy of your time doesn’t do the film justice. You can’t go wrong with anything that has Shane Black’s name on the script.

Check out this amaze variant cover for BOOM Studio’s limited series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink #1

This is a limited series that is a spin off from Boom’s current Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ongoing series. Have any of you read it? The word of mouth is fantastic and I can’t wait to check it out but I am waiting on the trades to come out so it’s gonna be a little while yet before I get to see what all the fuss is about!

I think it’s brilliant that this new Power Rangers series is focusing on the original team. It has a ton of nostalgia factor around it but the fact it’s meant to be very good is the best part. With a new movie due out next year it’s like the mid 90’s all over again 🙂

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink #1 is available now.

JLA Volume 1

Spotlight on this great JLA run from Grant Morrison, Howard Porter & John Dell. This Vol.1 collection is packed with amazing 90’s art. It’s quite in your face but it certainly brings a sense of impact these larger than life characters deserve. Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, The Flash and Aquaman pop off the page.

Morrison’s plots range from a rival set of heroes offering to help Earth (which rubs the JLA the wrong way), cyborgs, angels and outlandish stakes that envelope time and space itself. It’s a great collection and one I highly recommend. His dialogue and commentary often reads as tongue in cheek but never at the expense of the characters. It just helps to give all the crazy on display some levity and it’s refreshing to see the characters and the plot not take itself super seriously.

Some of the plot points I wasn’t so clear on. Halfway through Superman sports a brand new costume and his skin has turned blue. Why? I have no idea but it looks bloody boss. There’s also some random running around calling himself Green Lantern and again it’s due to my lack of wider reading from this era that I have no idea who that guy is but none of that takes away from the fun and mayhem on display.

With Dawn of Justice due for home release soon and Justice League Part One due out next year JLA Volume One works as a neat detour and fun read while we wait for more cinematic adventures.
